Angharad Mary Rhees: the story of a British celebrity
Angharad Mary Rhees was both a talented actress and a successful businesswoman. After a 30-year career in film and theatre, she decided to make a radical change and opened a pub. She also made handmade jewellery. Each activity brought Mary not only pleasure but also income.
She was born in Wales in 1944. The family moved to England when the girl was 2. From a young age, Mary showed an interest in the theatre and joined the drama club at school. The girl’s talent was noticed, and she had the opportunity to study for two semesters at the Conservatoire de Paris. Mary later graduated from the University of Madrid, after which she stayed in Spain to teach English.
However, her love for the stage never left her. She returned to England, where she got a job in a small theatre.
The start of a television career
Mary regularly tried her hand at television. In 1968, she finally made it to television. Her first role was in the film version of the drama “Man and Superman”, where she played a maid. After that, Rhees began to act actively in films. She played both lead and supporting roles in such projects as:

The woman also appeared in theatre productions in London, where audiences always received her performances warmly. Mary also toured the UK as part of the company. As well as acting in plays, Rhees also performed her own poetry. All in all, her screen career lasted about 30 years. Mary played her last role in 1998.
Career change
Her son’s death in 1999 was a turning point in Mary’s life. She decided to call time on her acting career. However, she did not think long about what to do next – she always loved jewellery to wear and create. Mary set up a company called Angharad to make and design jewellery. As well as selling to private customers, the company also worked with film studios. For example, we can see Angharad jewellery in the film “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”, released in 2007. In addition to her design studio, Mary also ran a pub named in her honour.
Mary Rees died in 2012 after a long battle with cancer.
