Troy McClain: from troubled teen to successful businessman
Troy McClain is an American efficiency consultant who helps clients achieve professional success. He runs The McClain Company, which provides a range of marketing, business process management and communications services.
Troy was born in Alaska in 1971. His father was a construction worker, so the family moved around a lot. The boy spent much time with his grandfather, who taught him how to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors. His grandfather became an essential figure for the young businessman. He helped Troy find his way to success.
A difficult childhood
McClain was a restless and energetic child, and as he grew older, he became increasingly difficult to manage. He often got into fights and was emotional and quick-tempered. The family moved to Spokane, Washington in 1978. After picturesque Alaska, Troy had a hard time adjusting to city life. He continued to use his fists to solve problems, often starting conflicts at school. This was exacerbated by the trials and tribulations of his family.
In 1981, Troy’s sister contracted spinal meningitis, which left her deaf and stunted her mental development. His parents had by then divorced, and McClain found it increasingly difficult to cope with the emotional strain. Not knowing how to deal with it, the teenager left Spokane for Alaska in high school. What helped bring him back were the words of his grandfather, who told Troy that he needed to take responsibility for his mother and sister. With those words, his grandfather got through to the stubborn young man, and Troy returned to his family.
An important book in the young businessman’s life was The Art of Making Deals, written by Donald Trump. It was given to Troy by his mother in 1989. The book made a huge impression on McClain and gave him a new direction in life. Troy promised himself and his mother that he would ensure their family didn’t need money.
Steps to success
After graduating high school, the young man could not afford a university education. Instead, he focused on building his own business. Troy tried several ways to make money:
– opened a T-shirt manufacturing company;
– in 1994, he opened a gym where he taught karate;
– he took out a loan and opened a branch of a mortgage company in 1995;
– in 1996, Troy joined the Royal Mortgage Bank team, managing the Boise, Idaho office.
Shortly after, McClain opened his own lending business, The McClain. The company is now a full-service provider, helping clients with budgeting, cost management, developing and maintaining marketing strategies, and launching products in new markets.
The core strength of Troy and his business is the constant drive to improve. McClain uses innovative methods to achieve success and improve performance. McClain himself is a respected businessman and is an invited expert at various conferences, masterclasses and lectures. Troy’s success and professionalism are noted by many of his peers, including Donald Trump.
